Coral reefs cover less than 1% of the ocean floor but support approximately 25% of all marine species. Despite their ecological importance, reefs are under unprecedented threat from climate change, ocean acidification, and destructive fishing practices. Scientists warn that without significant changes in human behavior, up to 90% of coral reefs could be lost by 2050.
